The pit contained no diagnostic material culture. Other quarry pits in the area were all of a later Roman date. This feature was cut by enclosure ditch 012AD08341, and probably also by enclosure ditch 012AD05020, although this was not fully ascertained in the field.

Discussion

This was one of a number of quarry pits in the area. It was never fully excavated, and only two fills were removed. These was 012AD05163, a redeposited natural chalk in a light sandy clay loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 5/3), and 012AD05117, a sandy silty loam (Munsell color 10YR 4/2) containing 10% chalk inclusions, with slightcharcoal flecking evidident.  The only finds were all cattle bones from 012AD05163, although no articulation was noted.

The pit was cut into natural chalk. As the pit was not fully excavated, the profile was not recorded, although the section indicates a shallow V-shape in upper excavated segment.
