Phasing

The fill of this ditch contained exclusively (9) Roman sherds. However, it is obviously a phase of the same enclosure system as 012AC00133 located immediately to the west, which contains an Anglian sherd. Either the ditch is a Roman precursor for an Anglian phase, or they are both Anglian, with this ditch containing residual Roman material.

Discussion

A linear enclosure ditch aligned north/south and forming the boundary of enclosures to the east and west. The northern extent of the ditch was defined by a butt-terminal while the southern end turns south-west and intersects with ditches 012AC00033, 012AC00335 and 012AC07211 but the stratigraphic relationship between the features could not be established. Ditch 012AC00133 lies immediately to the west on a similar alignment and clearly forms a different phase of the same enclosure; the stratigraphic relationship between the two ditches could not be eastablished during excavation. No section drawing was recorded for this feature. The ditch was cut by two pits 012AC00373 and 012AC00166.

Three post holes (012AC00388, 012AC00390 and 012AC00392) were defined on the ditch base.

The ditch clearly cut through the lower fills of the depression 012AC09503, although the upper fills were homogenous in nature and difficult to differentiate. These depression fills were unusual in nature, and were classified as turf deposits during the excavation phase.
