Discussion

This was one of a number of rectangular spits excavated to define the sequence of north-south aligned ditches at the interface between the chalk and the edge of the dry valley. Spit 012AD00601 was located immediately to the north and spit 012AD00607 to the south. A further spit (012AD00807) was required in this area to clearly define the ditch edges. The material removed was a dark sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2) with 10% chalk inclusions, with no daub or charcoal flecking.
