Discussion

This was one of a number of rectangular spits excavated to define the sequence of north-south aligned ditches at the interface between the chalk and the edge of the dry valley. Spit 012AD00602 was located immediately to the south and spit 012AD00597 to the north. The material removed was a dark sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2) with 10% chalk inclusions, and no daub or charcoal flecking.
