Pit and Post Hole

Phasing

The only diagnostic find from the pit 012AD05560 was a sherd of late Romano-British pot sherd. The pit cut through the stone setting 012AD05496, and it was sealed by deposit 012AD05492, which contained exclusively Roman material. The post hole 012AD05562 contained three Romano British sherds.

Discussion

This pit was never really seen as an entity in its own right, rather it was revealed by the removal of deposit 012AD05492, and by a small hole in the stone setting 012AD05496. The fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 10% chalk inclusions. Slight charcoal flecking was noted. It is possible that the pit and the post hole were one and the same (a post hole and post pipe?), as all of the finds  appear in the same area when plotted.

The pit was cut into chalk with a rough and uneven profile.
