Discussion

A chalk quarry pit discovered when excavating possible Grubenhaus 012AD07058 and ditch 012AD05028. The quarry pit was not fully excavated, this being one of a cluster of 15 quarry pits located on the western edge of the dry valley. Where they were excavated, these pits were a Roman phenomenon. They appeared to have been quite rapidly backfilled with a mixture of soil and natural chalk.
