Phasing

The slot was phased to the Anglian period by virtue of a single Anglian sherd. As usual in this area, the majority of diagnostic material was later Roman (in this case 7 sherds). The slot cut through a parallel slot 012AD00606.

Discussion

This was the westernmost, and latest, of 2 parallel slots. Situated as they are, just to the south-east of an entrance into enclosure 012AD01006, it appears likely that they form some form of controlled access into the enclosure. The fill of this slot was a slightly lighter (Munsell 10YR 4/2) sandy loam, with 5% chalk inclusions. Both daub and charcoal flecking were evident, including a number of larger fragments of daub. The majority of animal bones recovered were of sheep/goat (60%), with cattle accounting for a further 35%.

The slot was cut into chalk with a V-profile. Plough truncation was not so evident in this part of the site, and it is likely that these are the true extents of the feature.
