Phasing

The slot was phased to the Anglian period by virtue of a single Anglian sherd. Also present were 2 Roman sherds. The slot was cut by parallel slot 012AD00456.

Discussion

This was the easternmost, and earliest, of 2 parallel slots. Situated as they are, just to the south-east of an entrance into enclosure 012AD01006, it appears likely that they form some form of controlled access into the enclosure. The fill of this slot was a darker (Munsell 10YR 3/2) sandy loam, with 10% chalk inclusions. Both daub and charcoal flecking were evident. Of the 5 animal bones recovered, 3 were distal sheep femurs.

The slot was cut into chalk with a V-profile. Plough truncation was not so evident in this part of the site, and it is likely that these are the true extents of the feature.
