Pit

Phasing

The only finds were two late Romano-British pot sherds. No stratigraphic relationships with the surrounding pits (012AD08246 to the south and 012AD08267 to the south-east) were established, although all of them were sealed by deposit 012AD08004.

Discussion

This elongated pit was initially believed to be part of a slot or ditch. It was located on the northern limit of area 12AD, and thus could only be partially excavated. It was rapidly excavated under a single fill number (012AD08248), although the south facing section indicates that an unseen feature had cut through this pit in the west. The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3) with 10-15% small chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking were noted.

The pit was cut into sand & gravel, and was believed to have a flat based V profile (despite being only partially excavated).
