Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic finds were two late Romano-British pot sherds. Although the fill exhibited a slightly reddish hue, this was not as pronounced as the burnt red daub deposits associated with many of the later featues in the southern part of the settlement. The pit cut through slot 012AD08197, and was sealed by deposit 012AD08004. No relationships with pits 012AD08249 to the north or 012AD08267 to the east were established.

Discussion

This was a large, deep pit (one of a number sealed by deposit 012AD08004), located near the northern limit of excavation of area 12AD. The pit was rapidly excavated under a single context fill number (012AD08245), although the section indicates at least two fills were present, including an upper fill with a higher chalk inclusion rate. Despite the reddish hue visible to the naked eye, when Munselled the sandy loam soil matrix was 10YR 4/3.

The pit was cut through ditch 012AD08197 and into sand & gravel, with a round-based V profile.
