Phasing

As is usual in area 12AD, most of the diagnostic pottery is of a later Roman date (14 sherds) , although 2 Anglian sherds were also recovered. This deposit sealed a number of both Anglian and Roman features, and it was cut by Grubenhaus 012AD08208.

Discussion

Originally believed to be a ditch with roughly the same orientation as 012AD08341 just to the south, it quickly became clear that this was not the case. Instead, 012AD08003 turned out to be a layer, which sealed 8 pits, 3 slots, a ditch and a quarry pit, although cut by Grubenhaus 012AD08208. The true limit of the layer was not established, as it continued to the north beyond the limit of the excavation, under the modern trackway to Rectory Farm. It appeared to fill either a natural depression, or a deliberately hollowed-out area, but this was not established during excavation. Where the limits were established, the edges were of sand and gravel, so it is possible the hollow was as a result of gravel quarrying, but this is speculative.

The fill was a medium sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), similar to, though visibly different from most of the hillwash deposits in the area. There was slight charcoal flecking, with occasional reddish daub tinges, though these were not pronounced and did not occur throughout the deposit.

The finds were not localised, and were found across the length of the deposit. A relatively high number of identifiable animal bones were recovered, most of these cattle bones, followed by sheep/goat remains.
