Phasing

The ditch was tetatively phased to the Middle Saxon period, based on typology (other short slots of this nature are Middle Saxon in the large enclosure to the west), as well as a possible iron stylus. Against this, the only other diagnostic finds were 3 Romano-British sherds. Stratigraphically, the ditch cuts ditch 012AD00013 and is cut by ditch 012AD00335.

Discussion

This is a short, although quite wide, ditch segment, the single fill a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/2), with 5% chalk inclusions. Some daub, but no charcoal flecking was evident, although 5 charcoal samples were recovered. The only animal bones were a single pig bone and 3 sheep/goat bones (all from a single leg).

The feature was cut into chalk, with a very wide flat-based U profile. Substantial plough truncation was evident.
