Discussion

Initially, these two ditch segments were believed to be different features, this interpretation based primarily of the different morphologies of these ditches, with segment 012AD00013 being narrow and straight, and segment 012AD00052 being much wider and slightly curvilinear. However, after rainfall and subsequent differential drying, it became apparent that the two were a single ditch. The northern part of the ditch had suffered more plough truncation than the southern third.

In the north, the ditch was filled with a light (Munsell 10YR 4/4) sandy loam, with no daub or charcoal flecking. The southern segment was filled with a slightly darker (Munsell 10YR 4/3) sandy loam, which contained slight charcoal but no daub flecking. All the diagnostic pottery recovered was Roman in date. Only four animal bones were recovered (1 horse and 3 cattle bones).

The ditch was cut into chalk, and had a flat based U profile in the north, and a flat based V profile in the south. A number of sections show evidence for a step in the eastern side, which may be evidence for a recut.
