Discussion

This was the fourth spit (beneath spit 011AD00060 and equal to the material in spit 011AD00063) of a silty clay layer (Munsell 10YR 4/1), excavated across the waterlogged area to the west of the spring pool. The Munsell colour varies considerably for this layer, because although it exhibits a blueish-green tinge when exposed, it oxidises within half an hour to a much browner colour. At this level, no waterlogged material was recovered, although water is now beginning to seep to the surface. Finds included two sherds of Roman pottery, an iron nail and two fragments of Niedermendig lava.
