The matrix diagram above shows an extract of the spits from the waterlogged area to the west of the spring (Area 11AD) indicating their relationships to each other. Discussion

This was the third spit (beneath spit 011AD00059 and equal to the material in spit 011AD00060) of a silty clay layer (Munsell 10YR 4/1), excavated across the waterlogged area to the west of the spring pool. The Munsell colour varies considerably for this layer, because although it exhibits a blueish-green tinge when exposed, it oxidises within half an hour to a much browner colour. At this level, no waterlogged material was recovered, although water is now beginning to seep to the surface. Iron panning was also visible. Finds included a winkle shell and a fragment of fired clay.
