Discussion

This was a shovel-scraped spit.(partially beneath 011AD00034) located across the western half of area 11AD. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour varying from 10YR 3/3 to 10YR 4/4, but generally 10YR 4/3). Finds included 2 Roman coins (an antoninianus of Carausius AD287-293 and a follis of Galerius Maximus AD309-310), a 2nd Century head stud bow brooch (Collingwood Q) and a partial Anglian annular brooch. Also found was a silver 1929 sixpence, one of only two Post Medieval coins found from the entire settlement excavation.
