Discussion

This was the fourth and final spit (beneath 011AD00027 and 011AD00030) over the potentially waterlogged area to the west of the spring pool, before the area was divided into a number of rectangular segments and excavated down in plan. The material removed (by shovel-scraping and then trowelling) was a silty clay loam, although areas of sandy loam and sandy clay loam were also present. As with spit 011AD00029, some bluish-grey clay was visible along the eastern baulk. The material found was still from a number of different periods (ranging from Prehistoric to Medieval). Finds included a late Roman coin (a follis of Constantine AD 311-314 ).
