Slot

Phasing

This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Click here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slots, ditch segments, or lines of posts, with this being one of the short slots (grouped together under Master number 012AD07233). The fill of this slot contained no diagnostic material. However, in all but one case, these slots contain exclusively Roman material culture. The significance of these features is not yet fully understood, although the longer features appear to relate to a form of spatial control of access to the southern part of the dry valley.  Located immediately to the east of ditch 012AD06249, this feature had no direct stratigraphic relationships with any others.

Discussion

The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 5% chalk inclusions. Slight daub and charcoal flecking was noted. Of all the slots in Master 012AD07233, this is one of only two (with 012AD08993) to contain no diagnostic finds. The only material culture was unidentified animal bone.

The slot was cut into hillwash, with a U-shaped profile. It was very shallow, like most of the other features in the immediate vicinity.
