Slot
Phasing
This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment ,
following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features
are all either short slots, ditch segments, or lines of posts, with this
being one of the short slots. The significance of these features is not
yet fully understood, although the longer features appear to relate to
a form of spatial control of the dry valley. In all but one case, these
slots contain exclusively Roman material. Located immediately to the north
of slot 012AD08991, this feature had no direct stratigraphic relationships
with other features.
Discussion
The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 20% chalk inclusions.
No daub or charcoal flecking was noted. Of all the slots in Master 012AD07233,
this is one of only two (with 012AD09160)
to contain no diagnostic finds. The only material culture was unidentified
animal bone.
The slot was cut into hillwash, with a U-shaped profile. It was very
shallow, like the other features in the immediate vicinity.
