Compacted Pebble Surface

Phasing

Although the remaining surface itself was not excavated (merely cleaned for recording), Roman sherds were noted embedded in the surface (not lifted). In addition, a corroded bronze late Roman coin (Gratian AD 367-378) was found.

Discussion

This small surviving patch of surface, although not excavated, was cleaned back for planning and recording, when the coin was found. The soil matrix was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). The surface was cut in the west by slot 012AD05786.
