Slot

Phasing

This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Click here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slots, ditch segments, or lines of posts, with this being one of the short slots (grouped together as master number 012AD07233). Although 21 late Roman sherds were recovered from this feature, the find of a single Anglian sherd makes this one of only two slots (the other being 012AD05662) to contain Anglian material. The material culture thus points to a Later Roman/Early Anglian date for this feature. The significance of these features is not yet fully understood, although the longer features appear to relate to a form of spatial control of access to the southern part of the dry valley.

Discussion

The single fill was a silty clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3) with 10% chalk inclusions. Occasional daub and charcoal flecking was noted. Quite a high density of animal bones were recovered, with similar numbers of cattle, sheep/goat and pig.

The slot was cut into hillwash with a wide-V profile.  It cut through a small patch of pebble surface (012AD08792) and was cut by post hole 012AD05823 (part of master 012AD07079)
