Phasing

This was the only one of the 4 parallel ditches to have any diagnostic material culture. These included a late Roman potsherd, a blue globular glass bead, a copper alloy lozenge with 2 perforations, and part of an Anglian single-sided composite bone comb. The relationship with slot 012AD00009 just to the west was not established.

Discussion

All of the features in the immediate area were severely plough truncated, situated as they are on a chalky knoll. It is probable that this feature, along with parallel ditches 012AD000041, 012AD00005 and 012AD00039, are just the remnant bases of a number of recuts of an enclosure ditch which only survives in this short segment.

The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), with a 5% chalk inclusion rate. There was no charcoal or daub flecking present. Although the animal bone recovered was predominantly sheep/goat, some cattle was also present. Unusually, like ditch 012AD00005, a cat humerus was found. The ditch was cut into white chalk with a U-profile (where it was deep enough to be established).
