Phasing

Although containing no diagnostic material culture, this ditch has been phased to the Anglian period, based on its association with 012AD00007.

Discussion

All of the features in the immediate area were severely plough truncated, situated as they are on a chalky knoll. It is probable that this feature, along with parallel ditches 012AD00007, 012AD00005 and 012AD00041, are just the remnant bases of a number of recuts of an enclosure ditch which only survives in this short segment.

The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), with a 5% chalk inclusion rate. There was no charcoal flecking present, and a single fragment of daub was recovered. Also found was a small fragment of ?slag, and 2 small animal bones. The ditch was cut into white chalk with a U-profile (difficult to establish due to the extreme shallowness of the feature).
