Slot

Phasing

All of the diagnostic objects from this feature were late Roman in date (four Romano-British pot sherds). This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Click here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slots, ditch segments, or lines of posts, with this being one of the short slots (grouped together as master number 012AD07233). The significance of these features is not yet fully understood, although the longer features appear to relate to a form of spatial control of access to the southern part of the dry valley. The relationships with ditches 012AD05660 and 012AD05798 were not established.

Discussion

The fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3) with 10-15% chalk inclusions. Unlike the two slots (012AD05798 and 012AD05826) to the west, this fill contained only occasional daub and charcoal flecking. No indentifiable animal bones were recovered.

The slot was cut into hillwash with a very shallow, wide-V profile.
