Quarry Pit

Phasing

No material culture was recovered from the fills of this feature. However, other quarry pits in the immediate vicinity all appear to be later Roman in date. Stratigraphically, this pit cuts through quarry pit 012AD05180 to the north, before both pits are sealed by layer 012AD05155. All are then cut by ditch 012AD08016, which contained part of an Anglian wrist clasp.

Discussion

This is one of at least 15 quarry pits Click for a plan of all the quarry pits in the area   on the western edge of the dry valley cut to extract the white chalk found in this vicinity, all of which appear to be later Roman in date. The primary fill (012AD05403), was a mixed loamy sand and redeposited natural sand (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with very few chalk inclusions. Some charcoal flecking was noted. The deposit covered all of the base of the feature. This was sealed by 012AD05394, a redeposited natural chalk (70%) in a sandy clay loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 5/3). A small pit (012AD05212) was then cut through these two deposits, filled with a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). Occasional charcoal flecks were noted. The fill (012AD05211) which contained only animal bones (including skull and pelvis fragments from both a cow and a pig, as well as a sheep/goat phalanx). The redeposited natural and pit 012AD05212 were then both sealed by 012AD05327, a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with 10% chalk inclusions. Charcoal inclusions were noted.

The pit was cut into natural chalk. It had an unusual profile, as it exended out beyond the surface plan to the east, presumably to extract the maximum quantity of the type of chalk required.
