Quarry Pit

Phasing

Seven late Roman pot sherds were recovered, although a flint flake and a Niedermendig lava fragment were also present, all in the upper fill (012AD05179). Stratigraphically, the pit is the earliest event in the immediate vicinity, and other quarry pits in the area are of a later Roman date.

Discussion

This was one of a group of quarry pits in the area, and it was cut by another pit (012AD05238) and a ditch (012AD08016). The primary fill (012AD05241) was a silty sand (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with very few chalk inclusions. No finds were recovered from this fill. It was sealed by 012AD05190, a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), which was mixed with a redeposited chalk natural (up to 60% in places). A single dog bone was the only find from this fill. All but one of the finds were from the upper fill, 012AD05179, a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 5-10% chalk inclusions. Charcoal was noted (3 samples taken), but no daub flecking.

The pit was cut into chalk and a sandy chalk gravel, with an irregular profile.
