Quarry Pit
Phasing
The only diagnostic material culture were two late Romano-British pot sherds.
This is one of at least 15 quarry pits
on the western edge of the dry valley, all of which appear to be later
Roman in date, cut to extract the white chalk found in this vicinity. These
features were rapidly excavated, so only one stratigraphic relationship
was established, that this was cut by pit 012AD05284
on the west.

Discussion
This chalk quarry pit was rapidly excavated in order to retrieve dating
material from the feature, so only a single number (012AD05267) was issued.
Generally the material removed was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR
4/2), with 20% chalk inclusions, but much higher levels of redeposited
chalk were also encountered. There was slight charcoal flecking.
The pit was cut into angular chalk natural, with a U-shaped profile.
