Phasing

This feature clearly cut through ditch 012AD001006, and appeared to butt onto north-south oriented enclosure 012AD00530. Although all of the diagnostic material (4 Roman sherds) from the feature was later Roman in date, the stratigraphic relationship with 012AD01006 indicates either a later Anglian or Middle Saxon phase for this feature.

Discussion

A shallow, plough truncated ditch, on the same alignment as ditch 012AD00019 just to the north. The fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2) with very few (<3%) chalk inclusions. Slight daub and charcoal flecking was noted. As it appears to butt onto 012AD00530, and did not continue beyond this feature to the west, this may have formed one side of an internal division of the larger enclosure.

The ditch was cut into chalk with a V-profile (although this was difficult to establish due to the severe plough truncation).
