Phasing

The only diagnostic material recovered was a single late Roman sherd. No stratigraphic relationships were established with either ditches 012AD01006 or 012AD00448 However, the fact that this ditch was on exactly the same alignment as 012AD00448, which was phased to the later Anglian or Middle Saxon period, indicates a similar date for this feature.

Discussion

A short ditch segment , which appears to form part of the larger enclosure 012AD01006, although no relationship was established. It is highly likely that the ditch extended further to the east, although this could not be proven, as the area was almost completely plough truncated. The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), with 25-30% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted.

The ditch was cut into chalk, generally with a V-shaped profile.
