Discussion

The pit was completely sealed by by fill 0012AD00074 in ditch 012AD01004, and was thus not seen until this fill had been almost completely removed. It was quite different in nature to the ditch fill, being a very light (Munsell 10YR 5/3) sandy clay loam, with 20% chalk inclusions. Charcoal but no daub flecking was noted. The pit contained only a single Roman sherd and a charcoal fragment, as well as one cattle bone and 3 sheep/goat bones.

The pit was cut into chalk, with a flat-based V profile.
