Discussion

This is one of a number of different ditches (with 012AD07227, 012AD00032, and 012AD00017) which all terminate in the the same place, indicating a long standing boundary corner at this point.

The ditch fill varied along its length, although each excavated segment appeared to be filled with the same material (i.e no secondary fills). In the south (012AD00014) the ditch was filled with a sandy loam, slightly darker (Munsell 10YR 3/3) than the other segments, with no daub or charcoal flecking. No objects and only 3 animal bones were recovered from this segment. The second segment (012AD00074) contained a slightly lighter (Munsell 10YR 4/3) sandy clay loam, with 10% chalk inclusions. No daub flecking was noted. The fill contained 1 single Roman sherd and a lump of charcoal, with only 3 animal bones. The third segment (012AD00047) was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3) with 5% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking noted. Again, no objects were recovered, although the animal bone total was slightly higher at 7 bones. The most northerly segment (012AD00063) was a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3) with 5% chalk inclusions. Some daub flecking was noted. However, the number of objects (25) and animal bones (18) in this segment increases significantly. Most of the objects (13) were fragments of daub, although significant finds include a copper alloy sub-trinagular headed dress pin and an iron heckle tooth. As usual in this area, the animal species represented were predominantly cattle and sheep/goat. Also in this segment, 4 postholes (012AD00400, 012AD00417, 012AD00419 and 012AD00496 were found, cut into the western edge of the ditch.

The ditch was cut into chalk, generally with a wide, flat-based V profile.
