Discussion

This is one of three ditches (with 012AD00818 and 012AD00819) which only appeared on the surface in this excavated segment, confirming the number of recuts which were only visible in section further to the south. The only diagnostic finds recovered from this ditch segment were late Roman in date, but these are likely to be residual, as the ditch is stratigraphically Middle Saxon in date. The fill was a fine sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with less than 5% chalk inclusions. Daub and charcoal flecking were noted throughout, as was the case with all of the ditch fills in the eastern arm of the enclosure. The ditch was cut into hillwash, and had a round-based V-profile.
