Discussion

This is one of three ditches (with 012AD00818 and 012AD01018) which only appeared on the surface in this excavated segment, confirming the number of recuts which were only visible in section further to the south. Very few objects were recovered, with the only pottery being late Roman in date. However, the find of a single sided composite bone comb places the ditch firmly into the Saxon period. The fill was a fine sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with 5% chalk inclusions. Daub and charcoal flecking were noted throughout, as was the case with all of the ditch fills in the eastern arm of the enclosure. The ditch was cut into hillwash, and had a flat-based U-profile.

It was thought to be possible that 012AD01020 (seen only in section to the north) could relate to this phase of enclosure, although this was not proved by excavation.
