Phasing

Although the only diagnostic material from the ditch was Roman in date, association with the other segments of enclosure to the south and east indicate at least an Anglian (possibly Middle Saxon) date for this enclosure.

Discussion

A curvilinear enclosure ditch aligned north-west/south-east and forming the southern boundary of an enclosure to the north. Further ditches on a similar alignment lie to the north (012AC00033 and 012AC07211) and to the south (012AC09502) This ditch appears to be part of a sequence with 012AC00335 and the short segment 012AC00356 which form different phases of the same enclosure system. Also included in this master is number 012AC00267. This was a segment excavated over both this feature and 012AC00335, before they were defined as two separate events.

The ditch fill was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), with occasional chalk inclusions. Unlike 012AC00335 to the west, no daub flecking was noted. Of particular note was the find of part of an articulated crow or rook. It was cut into chalk with a flat based, gentle V-shaped profile.
