Pit

Phasing

There was no diagnostic material culture from this feature. The pit was sealed by one of the upper layers (012AC00026) in the turf-filled depression 012AC09503. No stratigraphic relationships with the two pits (012AC00147 and 012AC00208) to the west was determined.

Discussion

This was a shallow pit (one of a number cutting through the surface 012AC00022), in the turf-filled depression (012AC09503) located in the centre of area 12AC. It was filled with a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3). Some large angular chalk fragments were present, although these were believed to be residual (from 012AC00259). The only find was a single charcoal sample. Also present was a possible post hole (012AC00210). This may have been a separate feature or may just have been a slightly deeper part of the pit, although it was issued with its own context number. No finds were recovered from the fill of this feature, which like 012AC00211, was a medium sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3).
