Pit

Phasing

The pit is phased to the Anglian period, with finds of 2 Anglian sherds and Niedermendig lava. As is usual in this area, the majority of diagnostic material culture was from the late Roman period. It was sealed by layer 012AD08004, itself cut by Grubenhaus 012AD08208.

Discussion

This was one of a number of pits exposed by the removal of layer 012AD08004, itself originally believed to be a ditch. The pit was unusual in having a number of discrete fills, seemingly tipped in from the south.

The primary fill (012AD08336) was a redeposited natural light sandy gravel (Munsell colour 10YR 5/4) with no daub or charcoal flecking. No finds were recovered from this layer. The section indicates that this layer was in fact a number of separate events, with at least 2 much higher concentrations of chalk fragments being deposited. The secondary fill (012AD08334), was a dark (Munsell 10YR 3/3) sandy loam, which appeared to have a slightly reddish tinge. Slight charcoal flecking was noted, although the only finds were a fragment of stone and a cattle mandible. Laying above this was layer 012AD08333, a dark (Munsell 10YR 3/2) ashy layer, with daub and charcoal flecking. Finds included a fragment of slag, red sandstone and two Romano-British sherds. Layer 012AD08335 sealed 012AD08333, and was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 3/3) with a very slight red tinge noted. Daub flecking was present, but no charcoal flecks were noted. The layer contained two Romano-British sherds.

Sealing all of the other layers was 012AD08320, a lighter (Munsell 10YR 4/3) sandy loam, with 15% chalk inclusions. This layer contained the majority of the material culture, and it was from this fill that the Anglian material was recovered.
