Phasing

A single sherd of late Roman pottery was recovered from this feature, which is one of a number of slots Plan of the later slots in the immediate area. It may have cut through ditch 012AD08104, although due to its shallow nature, this was difficult to establish.

Discussion

A short, curvilinear slot, this was filled with a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with a 3% chalk inclusion rate, 0.5-1cm in diameter. Some daub and charcoal flecks were noted in the southern excavated segment (012AD00812). The only other find (apart from unidentifiable animal bone fragments) was a piece of iron slag.

The slot was cut into hillwash, and was so shallow that a profile could not be established in the northern excavated segment. In the south, the slot was deeper and had a U-shaped profile.
