Pit

Phasing

The pit contained no diagnostic material culture, although stratigraphically it must be earlier than the Middle Saxon period. Typologically, most of the other quarry pits in the area contain only later Roman material.

Discussion

This was a quarry pit, cut by enclosure ditch 012AD00272. It was located on the interface between chalk bedrock and hillwash deposits. The primary fill (012AD00586), was a dark, silty clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2), with less than 5% chalk inclusions. Some daub was noted, and almost 5% of the fill was composed of charcoal flecking. This was sealed by a burnt daub deposit (012AD00546), with a Munsell colour of 2.5 YR 4/8. It contained charcoal flecking and pink chalk fragments, indicating it was probably a dump of furnace material. This deposit did not extend across the whole length of the feature. Then came fill 012AD00588, a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), which contained 10% chalk inclusion, angular and up to 10cm in diameter. Some daub and charcoal flecking was noted, and only small fragments of bone were recovered. The final fill was 012AD00587, a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with up to 30% chalk inclusions. There was no daub or charcoal flecking. Some bone which may have been in this fill was lifted under the ditch fill number 012AD00271.

The pit was cut into natural chalk in the south and hillwash in the north, with an irregular U-shaped profile.
