Discussion

This small, sub-rectangular spit was excavated to try and establish the relationship between the quarry pit 012AD05266 and the east-west aligned ditch 012AD05024. No clear relationship was established, although the material culture from these features indicates that the ditch cuts the quarry pit. The material removed was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). A late Roman coin (AD 388-393 Theodosius) was found in the north-west corner of the spit, almost certainly deriving from the quarry pit. All the other finds were later Roman pot sherds.
