Phasing

The ditch was assigned a Middle Saxon phase, based on its typology and stratigraphic relationships. Problems with this are that the only diagnostic material culture were a late Roman sherd and a sherd of Medieval green glazed ware. An iron knife was also found, although it could be either Roman or Anglian in date.

Discussion

The fill of the ditch was a sandy loam, with 5% chalk inclusions, which varied in colour from 10YR 4/3 in the south to 10YR 4/2 in the north. The northern ditch segments also contained daub and charcoal flecking, and almost all of the finds were from these segments. However, this difference can be explained by the level of plough truncation in the south, where only between 4 and 7cm of the ditch remained. The finds reflect this disturbance, with date ranges from the Roman period to a sherd of Medieval green glaze. The animal bone species totals area similar to the majority from the southern part of area 12AD, with cattle accounting for 50 %, sheep/goat for 38%, and pig for only 6% of the total.

The ditch was cut into chalk and had a U-profile (where this could be determined). Although treated as a separate entity, pit 012AD00571 is located at the northern terminus of the ditch, and may have been associated with the ditch. This phenomenon also occurs in the ditch immediately to the west (012AD00520) with pit 012AD00432, although in this case the pit is located at the southern terminus.
