Pit

Discussion

The pit appeared to mark the northern terminus of ditch 012AD00017, in a similar way to pit 012AD00432 and ditch 012AD00520, situated just to the west, although in that case the pit was at the southern terminus. The section indicates that a small gap is present between the pit and ditch 012AD00017, although this may be due to plough damage. There is no evidence for the placing of a post hole at the end of the ditch, although as already stated, the whole area was severely plough truncated. The fill was a quite light coloured (Munsell 10YR 4/2) sandy loam, with 10% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted. The only object from the pit fill was a sherd of Romano-British pottery.

The pit was cut into chalk, and was too badly truncated to establish a profile.

Also included in this master is the spit 012AD00463, which almost exclusively was material removed from directly above the pit. Initially removed in order to establish the relationships between ditch 012AD00017 and slot 012AD00851, it soon became apparent that these two did not meet, and only the pit was found under the spit.
