Pit

Discussion

The pit appeared to mark the southern terminus of ditch 012AD00520, in a similar way to pit 012AD00571 and ditch 012AD00017, situated just to the east, although in that case the pit was at the northern terminus. There is slight evidence for the placing of a post hole at the end of the ditch, although the section was incorrectly placed to verify this. The fill was a slightly darker (Munsell 10YR 3/2) sandy loam, with 5% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted. The only objects found were red chalk fragments (?post packing), although these could be derived from locally occurring outcrops of this material. Also found were parts of a cattle hoof, a sheep foot and a pig skull (all fragmentary).

The pit was cut into chalk with a steep-sided V-profile, and had no other stratigraphic relationships.
