The only pottery recovered was later Roman (3 sherds), although the finds of 2 fragments of Niedermendig lava indicate an Anglian or later date for the feature.

Discussion

This was classified as an "undefined feature", as it was never clearly defined like the other ditches in the area. Its edges were amorphous, and the cut was irregular and lumpy. This being said, it is possible that this is part of a linear arrangment of discrete segments (with 012AD00288 and 012AD00528). This arrangement of almost touching segments was also noted in enclosure ditch 012AD01006, located some 21 metres to the west.

The primary fill was a quite light (Munsell 10YR 4/4) sandy loam, with 10% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking was present. A single sherd of Roman pottery was recovered. Of the 4 animal bones found, two were burnt. The secondary fill was a slightly darker (Munsell 10YR 4/3) sandy clay loam. Most of the finds came from this layer, including a cockle shell and the fragments of Niedermendig lava. Although most of the animal bones were the usual mix of cattle and sheep/goat, a single cat ulna and a hare calcaneum (heel bone).

The feature was cut into red and white chalk, with a exceptionally irregular profile and base, roughly in a wide V-shape.
