Discussion

This was the initial machine clearance of the ploughsoil. In the western and northern parts, the soil coverage was very thin, rising slightly towards the east. The underlying geology was all chalk, occurring in bands of pink and white running in an approximate east-west direction. The chalk is more frost shattered in the east than in the western part of the area, where the chalk is of the solid, bedrock type. Very few features were found in this part of the site, with the exception of the ridge and furrow field system (011AC10000) and a Grubenhaus (011AC10015). One of the few human skeletons from the settlement area was also found in this area (011AA00035), as well as two prehistoric cremations (011AC00037 and 011AC00039).
