Cremation Pit

Discussion

This, along with 011AC00037, is one of 2 cremations in this area. It was first observed immediately after the removal of topsoil by machine. The initial observation was of a coarse grit-tempered pottery which was red on one side, black on the other. The pit contained several sherds (though not that of a whole pot) of this pottery, which, like cremation 011AC00037, were dated to the Middle Bronze Age. All of the excavated fill (a sandy silty loam of friable texture and Munsell colour 10/YR/42) was retained. The fill also contained several small fragments of burnt and calcined bone, most of these being less than 1cm in diameter. One snail shell (possibly intrusive?) was also recovered.
