Discussion

A sub-rectangular pit in the north of area 11AB. The pit probably cut through inner enclosure ditch 011AB10005, although this was not definitely established during the excavation phase. This feature probably has a close functional relationship with pit 011AB00336  with a Middle Saxon date likely for both. The pit was excavated over two seasons and therefore has 11AB and 11BF context numbers. Three definite post holes in the base of the pit were recovered and there is also likely to have been a fourth under the baulk. The pit contained a large amount of carbonised grain and charcoal but these were present in the largest amounts in the secondary fill and are probably the result of later activity. The function of this structure is unclear although it may have been a latrine that was regularly cleaned with the waste material dumped in cess pit 011AB00336. This structure is paralleled in area 12AA (012AA00251).
