Discussion

This inner ditch is the middle phase of the three main phases of this large enclosure system, all of which extend up to the stream channel to the east. Due to the excavation technique of issuing a different fill and cut context number for each excavated segment of ditch, the sheer number of contexts issued (75 fill numbers) has necessitated a different technique for dealing with the catalogue entry for this phase of the enclosure ditch. Cut number 011AB00060 has no fills as it was extremely difficult to establish the edges of the ditch in this area. The area around this segment of the enclosure was excavated in two spits (11AB00022 and 011AB00029), which extended over the ditch and its immediate area. The maximum depth of the enclosure was based on the best surviving area (the south-west) where a number of excavated segments reached a depth of over 90cm. The maximum width was based on the northern and western parts of the enclosure, as the southern part had a number of recuts which made it difficult to establish the true width of any single phase of the ditch.

This phase of the enclosure system contained the highest density of finds (1464) with the ratio of objects to animal bones being 49:51. The area enclosed was 2581 sq. metres, making this the smallest of the three phases of enclosure.
