The feature contained a worked bone spoon and a die, both of which are assigned a Middle Saxon date. Incidentally, the bone die was loaded!

Discussion

A deep, sub-circular pit in the north of area 11AB. The pit cut through inner enclosure ditch 011AB10005 into chalk natural. This feature probably has a close functional relationship with pit 011AB00539, immediately to the west, with a Middle Saxon date likely for both. The primary fill (011AB00463) contained a variety of objects and animal bone within a dark, humic fill. The secondary fill (011AB00391) contained a large concentration of finds including coprolites, charcoal and a bone die. The fill had a green tinge and is likely to be filled with cess material. The final fill (011AB00335) contained a small amount of carbonised grain, probably the result of later activity. The amount of finds from this feature is interesting; a total of 46 objects and 75 animal bones, concentrated in the middle of the pit. This feature is likely to have been a cess pit, with material dumped within from the cleaning of the possible latrine 011AB00539.
