Discussion

First cleaning of the south western part of area 2CA, under the machine stripping, roughly equating to the position of a chalk knoll. The spit was begun in 1986, being recleaned and extended in 1987. The surface revealed was a predominantly decayed chalk, with a large number of solution holes. The makeup of the soil was principally a loamy windblown sand, (Munsell 10/YR/44). No animal bone and only two objects were recovered from this spit. The removal of this spit helped to define the position of six Grubenhauser (002CA00041, 002CA00089, 002CA00286, 002CA00762, 002CA00763 and 002CA07002), a north-south oriented ditch (002CA00162) and part of a pit alignment (002CA00165). It was clear that the area had suffered quite severely from plough damage, and thus most of the tops of the remaining features had already been removed. Detailed planning of the entire chalk area did not significantly increase the amount of information retrieved.
