Slot

Phasing

All of the objects from this feature were late Roman in date (one illegible coin and seven Romano-British pot sherds). This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Click here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slots, ditch segments, or lines of posts, with this being one of the short slots (grouped together as master number 012AD07233). The significance of these features is not yet fully understood, although the longer features appear to relate to a form of spatial control of the dry valley. No stratigraphic relationship with ditch 012AD07221 was established.

Discussion

The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 10% chalk inclusions. Some charcoal and slight daub flecking was noted. Two large chalk blocks were noted in the south, one of which appeared to be slightly rounded. The fill contained quite a selection of animal bone species for such a small feature, including six cattle, four sheep/goat, pig, domestic goose and a cat bone.

The slot was cut into hillwash, with a U-shaped profile. It was slightly deeper at the northern end.
